Wix, an AI builder or a web designer?
A website builder looks cheaper until you add up two years. Here’s what Wix, the AI builders and a web designer really cost a South African business, what each one does for you on Google, and when building it yourself is the right call.
The short answer
Use a builder if the site is a placeholder and you have more time than money. Hire a designer if it has to win you customers. Over two years, even Wix’s cheapest paid plan costs more than a custom-built site from us at R5 500, and on Wix you do the work.

What a website builder really costs
A builder charges you every month for as long as the site is up. A web designer charges once, or monthly if you’d rather spread it, and then the site is yours. Here’s the same small business website over two years, three ways.
- Plan, year one
- about R3 350
- Domain, year one
- free with the plan
- Plan, year two
- about R3 350
- Domain, year two
- at Wix’s price
- Who builds it
- you
Over two years, before taxR6 700+
- Design and build, up to 6 pages
- R5 500
- Hosting
- free
- .co.za domain, two years
- about R300
- Who builds it
- we do
Over two years, roughlyR5 800
- R599 a month × 12, then it’s yours
- R7 188
- Year two: Care, R150 a month
- R1 800
- Hosting and the domain
- included
- Who builds it
- we do

Wix lists its plans in US dollars, billed yearly, with tax added where it applies, so the rand price moves with the exchange rate. Light is US$17 a month. Core, the plan you need to take bookings or payments, is US$29, about R5 700 a year, and Business is US$39, about R7 700. A builder is cheap to start and expensive to keep.
What you get for the money
The price is half the comparison. With a builder you’re the designer, the writer and the developer, and the site is as good as the evenings you put into it.
| A website builder | A web designer like us | |
|---|---|---|
| Design | A template thousands of other sites share, adapted by you | Designed from a blank page around your customers |
| Words | Yours to write, page by page | Written with you, from how your business wins work |
| The basics are built in; the rest is up to you | Titles, structure and your business details set up, and tied to your Google Business Profile | |
| Phones | As quick as your template and every app you add | Built in code, kept light and tested on phones |
| Changes | You make them, whenever you find the time | A WhatsApp to the two people who built it |
| Leaving | A Wix site can’t be moved off Wix | Paid once, the site and domain are yours to take anywhere |
| Help | Wix’s support team, around the clock | Zack and Francois, with a reply within 2 working hours |
None of this makes a builder bad. It makes it a different job, and the real question is whether it’s a job you want.
When a website builder is the right call
Be honest about what the site has to do. A builder is the right call when:
- It doesn’t have to bring in work yet, and you need an address online this week for nothing.
- You’re testing an idea before you put money into it.
- You like design, you write well and you have evenings to spare.
- It’s for a club, a hobby or a once-off event.
If that’s you, start on Wix’s free plan and upgrade when you want your own .co.za address. Nobody should sell you a website you don’t need yet.
When to hire a web designer
Hire someone when the website has a job to do. That’s when:
- It has to bring in enquiries, bookings or sales, not just exist.
- Competitors in your town show up on Google, and you don’t.
- You’re paying a builder every month and still don’t like what you’ve got.
- Your hours are worth more running the business than learning an editor.
- You want it live in about 14 days, done properly, without learning a thing about websites.
What about AI website builders?
An AI website builder gives you a first draft in minutes. Wix builds a site from a single prompt, and most builders now do the same. For a placeholder, that’s a fair start.
It isn’t a website that wins work. The words are written from what every similar business says, the layout is the one the tool gives everyone, and it still runs on the builder’s monthly plan. You still have to check every claim, rewrite it in your own voice, swap the stock photos for real ones and set up Google, which is most of the work it promised to save you.
We don’t sell AI-generated sites. Every Clevex site is designed from a blank page and built in code by the two of us.
Wix or WordPress?
Wix is easier to start; WordPress is easier to leave. Neither is the whole answer for a business that wants its site to work without becoming a hobby.
- Wix
- Hosting, the editor and the templates in one monthly plan. Quick to start, and the site can never leave Wix.
- WordPress
- Free software you install on hosting you pay for, with a plugin for almost anything. It goes wherever you like, but someone has to keep it updated and secure, and every plugin adds weight.
- Built in code
- How we build: a site written for your business and hosted on Cloudflare’s free plan. No plugins to update and no hosting bill, so a once-off site’s only running cost is the domain.
Already on Wix?
Check it before you decide. Our free website check runs ten tests on your own site in a few seconds, Wix sites included: how fast it loads on a phone, whether customers can call or WhatsApp you in one tap, and whether Google can find your business.
If it’s time to move, we redesign Wix sites from scratch and point your old page addresses at the new pages, so the links to your business keep working. A domain you bought on Wix can move with you.
